Chevrolet Avalanche

The second generation Chevrolet Avalanche appeared in 2006 and is based on an upgraded platform, which received the designation GMT900. The car retained the previous concept with an all-steel body structure and a removable midgate at the rear of the cab. Compared to the previous generation, the exterior and interior have been completely updated, and many modern features have been added. Improved safety – the car received five stars in the NHTSA head-on test. Under the hood is an upgraded 5.3-liter V8 engine, which is later joined by a 6.0-liter unit. A new six-speed automatic has been available since the 2009 model year.

The base LS full-size Avalanche pickup has a 40/20/40 split front triple seat, power driver’s seat, stereo system with CD player, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control. Options include a CD changer, parking sensors, an auto-locking rear differential, and an adjustable pedal assembly. The LT trim comes with fog lights, separate comfort front seats, multi-steering wheel, center console and rear audio control with two headphone jacks.

Options include DVD navigation and rear entertainment system with remote control and wireless headphones, Bose premium acoustics, power sunroof, leather upholstery, remote start. The top version of the LTZ will offer standard 20-inch wheels, pre-installed navigation with a camera, adaptive suspension. In later versions, heated and ventilated leather seats, a Bose surround sound system, heated seats on the LT, and the LTZ get a heated steering wheel become standard on the top. The farewell release was the Black Diamond 2013 special series, which, in particular, added a whole package of equipment to the basic LS package at a bargain price.

As before, Avalanche offers two engine options. Only now the base 5.3-liter V8 engine has increased its output from 285 to 320 hp. Torque increased from 445 to 461 Nm. A 6.0-liter V8 was also available – it produces 366 hp. and 510 Nm. Initially, all versions of the pickup continued to be equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission, but soon it was replaced by a six-speed “automatic” Hydra-Matic 6L80, which reduced fuel consumption. The Avalanche pickup can be rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Since 2010, a two-speed transfer case has been offered as an option.

At the heart of the Chevrolet Avalanche is still a solid frame like its closest cousins the Chevrolet Suburban and Cadillac Escalade. Front independent double wishbone suspension, rear reliable bridge. In the maximum configuration, an adjustable air suspension is offered. Z71 Off Road package includes different springs and dampers, 18-inch off-road tires, standard “auto-block” in the rear axle, bottom protection sheets; Outwardly, the car is distinguished by modified parts of the front end, wheel extensions, chrome-plated running boards.

The maximum load capacity of the updated Avalanche is about 725 kg. The car can pull a trailer equipped with brakes weighing up to 3720 kg. Compared with the previous generation, the dimensions of the cargo compartment have not changed: 1600 x 1270 x 571 mm (L x W x H). If you recline the rear seat (folds in a 60/40 ratio), remove the sections of the partition (in Avalanche this is called the “middle board” – Midgate), then the loading length increases to almost 2.5 meters. But you can also fold down the tailgate to accommodate oversized cargo.

Standard security systems for the Chevrolet Avalanche at launch of the second generation include two-stage frontal airbags, a child seat anchorage system, ABS and electronic stability control with traction control, tire pressure monitoring, and GM OnStar emergency communications. Soon, side airbags also become standard, and an integrated electronic trailer brake controller is added. For the 2012 model year, the manufacturer added trailer sway control and hill assist to the stabilization system.

Chevrolet Avalanche can still be considered the benchmark in its class in terms of versatility. The updated version, although it has become better in terms of equipment, has the same disadvantages. On the road, the car behaves to match the big jeeps – clumsy, suffers from rolliness. The engines are not very economical, the quality of the materials inside leaves much to be desired. The Avalanche was discontinued in 2013. In total, since its introduction in 2001, more than 580,000 cars have been sold
