Chery Tiggo 5

Tiggo 5 is not an evolutionary product, but a revolutionary one. As I already said, Toyota’s ears stick out from the first Tiggo, and if you look closely, then Mitsubishi 4G6 engines. And if you dig even deeper, then with later Acteco engines in some markets you can also find a DP0 box, familiar to us from completely different cars. In general, that still hodgepodge. Another thing is Tiggo 5. At one time, the Chinese even built a separate plant in Dalian – this car was so different from all other products of the Celestial Empire. It is built on the iAUTO proprietary platform, which is also used to create, for example, Arrizo 7.

The platform was developed in Shanghai, but the design of Tiggo 5 is a more European product. It was designed by James Hope and Hakan Sarahoglu (who is familiar to us as the designer of the Porsche Cayman, Boxster and 918 Spyder). And I must admit that the crossover turned out to be not as Chinese in the bad sense of the word as the previous Tiggo. This is noticeable in the design, interior materials, and even in the smell, which is remembered at any mention of the Chinese auto industry.

What the Tiggo 5 lacked was the choice of motors and gearboxes. The engine here is its own, but it is one – a two-liter “four” SQR484F with a capacity of 136 hp. The choice of boxes is also not shocking. Old school lovers will love the mechanical five-speed QR525MHE, more advanced citizens will like the QR019CHA variator. The choice is modest, but it is worth recognizing that the owners practically do not have significant complaints about either the engine or the boxes (including the CVT). Unless some do not have enough dynamics, but, most likely, some people simply want too much.

Yes, the lack of all-wheel drive on a crossover is considered by many to be a serious drawback. At the same time, they understand that getting into the mud on an urban crossover with a CVT is not the smartest idea. And I must admit that I did not find reviews with a more or less adequate experience in operating the Tiggo as an SUV. There are fans of riding Tiggo across Europe, driving thousands of kilometers on vacation, but almost always on asphalt. So, what is missing then? Handling on slippery roads and cross-country ability on snowy roads: “… it would be nice to have all-wheel drive for such crossovers. Although I don’t drive in impassable nonsense, it drags me into icy conditions due to gravity”, “… the only thing I miss in Chery Tiggo 5 is the plug-in all-wheel drive and Auto mode for the whole winter.”

You won’t be able to drive Tiggo – the berry didn’t grow for that. But it is quite possible to drive around the city with confidence. And yes, it does well on the highway. Yes, some complain about overtaking at speeds of 100 km / h, but not too loudly. They understand that Tiggo is not a car. But what can not be taken away from the crossover is the perfectly coordinated operation of the motor and the variator. Almost everyone likes it: “This engine is just 5+ synchronized with a 7-speed CVT.” Well, for example, the variator does not have steps and cannot have them (we are talking about their imitation), but otherwise, most likely, it is so – too many good words have been said about this pair: “I am more and more convinced that I have a great car with a great engine and a perfectly matched transmission.” Well, or even like this: “Well, compared to Lifan, the car is fire. Of the “Chinese” on which I rode, perhaps the most adequate combination of variator / engine.

I note that Chery is not shy to admit that the oil in the variator needs to be changed every 40 thousand kilometers. Maybe this is also part of the success of Tiggo 5 CVTs – they do not die ahead of time. Maybe the time has not come yet? Cars are relatively new.
