Decoding of Audi trouble codes. A4-A6

General diagnostics

If you are faced with certain malfunctions or just want to check your EPC (engine control unit) for errors, then you will need to diagnose. To do this, prepare a laptop, a special diagnostic adapter and an adapter. Please note: the laptop must have VAG COM software installed, without it, checking your Audi will be impossible. In addition, you may need a COM to USB adapter if your computer is not equipped with the first port.

The software can be downloaded freely on the Internet, but you will have to buy an adapter and a diagnostic adapter. When everything is ready, you can start diagnosing:

  1. First, you need to install all the necessary drivers for using the adapter. When the drivers are installed, a COM port should appear in the device manager of your laptop. Go to "Start", and then right-click on the mouse or touchpad, click on the "My Computer" icon. A window will appear in front of you, in which you need to click on "Properties". In the "Hardware" tab, you should select the "Device Manager" submenu. Here you can find the Ports tab. Click on it with the left mouse button and a small window with a list of adapters will open in front of you. Don't touch anything here, all settings are in order. Click on the "Advanced" tab. A window will appear on the laptop screen where you need to find the "Use (operation) FIFO buffers" construction site. There is a check mark opposite this line, it must be removed. The port number itself should be no higher than the number "4", remember the exact number.

  2. Now you need to find the diagnostic connector in your car. In older Audi models, it is located in the relay box under the bonnet. For more modern models, the diagnostic connector is installed in the passenger compartment. It should be under the steering wheel, closer to the driver's door. If your car is Audi A4, A6 or C5, but you couldn't find the connector, then try looking for it in the fuse box. Open the driver's door and from the end of the torpedo remove the plastic cover behind which the fuse box is located. The connector must be either under the steering wheel or in this block.
  3. When the diagnostic connector is found, you will need to connect to it. Connect the adapter through the adapter to the diagnostic connector and laptop. Also, the tester itself will need to be connected to the power supply. A cigarette lighter is fine for this.
  4. Now take a laptop and run a utility on it to diagnose EPC and check the car for faults. Having done this, turn the key in the ignition. Having opened the utility on your computer, go to the "Functions" (or "Options") section.
  5. Here you will need to specify the number of your COM port, which you configured earlier and remembered. Specify the number and click on the "Diagnostics" button (or "Test", depending on the software version). If everything is done correctly, then you will see a window as shown in the photo.
  6. Now with the left button of the touchpad or mouse click on "OK". After that click on "Apply".
  7. Return to the main menu and click on "Select". After that, you can see a new window in which certain controllers are indicated by sections. Here you can diagnose all at once or separately the engine, transmission system, electronics, chassis and so on. Click on "Engine".
  8. When the controller is selected, the program will start connecting to the EPC. The engine control unit will establish communication with your tester after some time. After a few minutes, a window will appear in front of you, where basic information directly about the controller will be indicated.
  9. To understand what problems are present in your vehicle Audi A4, A6 or another make, you will need to click on the "Troubleshoot EPC memory" button (or "Query the fault memory"). After that, a window will appear in front of you, in which all the breakdowns that were once recorded by the EPC of your car are indicated.

Find the diagnostic connector, and connect the laptop and the tester to it using the adapter

If you press the "Clear codes" button, all information about errors will be erased, but if the combination appears again, this already indicates a breakdown of the device.

Actually, now you need to decipher the combinations of the resulting faults. In the event that the EPC of your Audi A4 or A6 signals a breakdown of certain sensors, then this may indicate not only the failure of the device. This may indicate other system failures that have affected the functioning of the sensors. Or the problem may actually be in the operation of one of the sensors, and other error codes are the result of improper operation of the element. In the event that the devices are really faulty, the diagnostics will tell you about this after you erase the memory.

When work with the utility is completed, the ignition must be turned off. Then unplug the cigarette lighter (or other power from the tester). And only now can you disconnect the rest of the connectors.

Climate control diagnostics

Climate control in A6 cars has a self-diagnosis option. Depending on which version of the system your car is equipped with, it can have 61 diagnostic channels and more. To carry out a self-check of the climate control, follow these steps:

  1. Turn the ignition key. You do not need to turn on the system to test it. To start diagnostics, press the air flow button up, as well as the air circulation button in the car. They must be clamped at the same time.
  2. On the left screen, you will see the code 01c - this is the number of the first channel. To enter the channel, you must press the circulation button again. At this moment, you will see the content of the channel on the screen. That is, if there is an error, it will be shown here.
  3. To get to the next channel, you must press the "+" temperature button. Accordingly, press “-” to return to the previous channel.

In the event that the climate control system of your car is faulty or there are some nuances in its operation, then this error will be displayed on the screen. Below is the explanation of the combinations.

Now let's talk about decoding the received fault codes.

Climate system errors

Below are the most common combinations of errors that can be encountered when diagnosing the climate system of Audi A6, A4 and other similar models.

Error code

His description

00.0

The EPC reports no malfunctioning.

From 02.1 to 02.4

The appearance of one of these codes signals a breakdown of the temperature sensor in the plafond or an open or short circuit. It is necessary to diagnose the circuit and check the sensor directly .

From 03.1 to 03.4

The appearance of these codes may indicate damage to the temperature sensor in the torpedo of your car itself. Also, this combination of symbols can indicate an open or short circuit in the electrical wiring. The circuit from the EPC to the sensor must be ringed and identified if there are breaks.

From 04.1 to 04.4

One of these symbol combinations informs the driver about the malfunction of the intake air temperature control regulator. It should check the device , and also to ring circuit .

From 05.1 to 05.4

Such codes indicate a breakdown of the temperature control mechanism of the front panel of the vehicle. You will need to check the regulator itself in more detail, as well as diagnose the wiring.

From 06.1 to 06.4

Incorrect operation of the coolant temperature control regulator in the engine. Sometimes drivers, seeing this code, immediately check the antifreeze for boiling. But this is optional. Because if the refrigerant starts to boil, it will be clear if you open the expansion tank. In addition, certain malfunctions in the operation of other sensors may affect the error of this device. Therefore, as in the previous cases, you should check the circuit and the performance of the sensor itself.

From 07.1 to 07.4

One of these combinations signals incorrect operation or breakdown of the thermistor for turning on the fan of the motor cooling system. Warm up your car to operating temperature and make sure that the fan is working properly. If so, then check the thermistor itself and its circuit.

From 08.1 to 7.8

Incorrect operation or damage to the potentiometer of the regulator of the first temperature flap. You should also check the wiring itself for breaks and shorts.

From 11.1 to 11.7

Such combinations indicate incorrect functioning of the potentiometer of the adjustment device of the first central flap. As in the case with the rest of the climate system sensors, it should be checked for operability, and the wiring should also be ringed.

From 13.1 to 13.7

A breakdown or failure of the potentiometer of the regulator of the first foot valve is reported. If the device is really out of order, then it should be replaced. But before that, check its performance .

From 15.1 to 15.7

Incorrect operation or breakage of the potentiometer of the air flow damper adjustment device Replace the mechanism if necessary.

17.0

Incorrect operation of the control speed control regulator. Check the device, and ring the wiring if it works.

From 18.1 to 18.3

These diagnostic combinations indicate an abnormal voltage level applied to the external airflow fan. Perform diagnostics device .

From 20.1 to 20.3

These numbers indicate incorrect operation or damage to the second compressor clutch. In particular, incorrect voltage can be applied to the clutch. Accordingly, this should be checked.

From 22.1 to 22.5

These errors indicate malfunctions in the cooling system. In particular, the EPC recorded an incorrect operation of the high pressure valve in this system. To avoid possible problems that may follow if the device is untimely replaced, it should be diagnosed more carefully. It is also recommended to ring the wiring for breaks or short circuits.

From 29.1 to 29.4

Such combinations inform the motorist about the slippage of the compressor strap.

0030

Malfunction in the functioning of the left control device temperature of the heat exchanger.

0031

Incorrect operation of the right temperature sensor of the heat exchanger.

0032

This code indicates a breakdown of the evaporator temperature control device. Check out his performance , but also to ring wiring .

0033, 0034

The EPC informs the motorist of the need to replace the foot temperature controller. We are talking directly about the sensor located under the rear passenger seat. Check its performance and ring the wiring .

0035, 0036

Such combinations of symbols indicate a malfunction of the temperature regulator for the legs. This already refers to a sensor that monitors the temperature in the area of the feet of the front seats. Both devices are located in the torpedo, on the left and right sides.

0087

The front left wheel acceleration regulator is out of order or does not function.

0088

The same, except for the front left wheel.

0089

The rear left wheel acceleration sensor is out of order.

008A

Indicates a breakdown of the acceleration control regulator of the rear right wheel.

008B. 008C

One of these combinations of faults indicates a breakdown or incorrect operation of the body acceleration control regulator. It is necessary to carry out a more detailed diagnosis of the devices and replace them if they are really out of order. You also need to ring the circuit itself .

00DE

This error code informs the car owner about poor communication with the rain sensor. It is necessary to carry out a more detailed check of the regulator and check the circuit for breaks and shorts.

00DF

The control lamp of the vehicle tilt control device does not function. Replace it or check the circuit to avoid future problems.

00FB

The fourth control device for the level of gasoline in the gas tank.

011B, 011D

By means of such combinations, the on-board computer warns of damage or incorrect operation of the control regulator for monitoring the speed of the front left or right wheel. It is necessary to check the sensor more carefully and, if any breakdowns are found, replace it. It is also worth ringing the wiring from the ECU to the sensor itself.

011C, 001E

One of these combinations indicates a breakdown or incorrect operation of the intake or exhaust valve of the ABS system in the front or rear brake circuit. A more thorough check of the devices should be carried out and, if necessary, they should be replaced.

011F

The rear wheel rotation control regulator is not functioning correctly. In particular, we are talking about the right wheel, and the sensor itself is marked as " 44".

0120

This error code means that a malfunction has occurred in the operation of the actuator designed to lock the steering wheel. Or the mechanism does not work at all It is necessary to check the efficiency of the regulator more carefully.

0121

The inlet or outlet valve of the ABS system in the rear right brake circuit does not work or does not function correctly.

0122

The system reports the inoperability of the rear left wheel speed control regulator. This regulator is labeled "G46".

0123

This error may indicate the failure of several regulators at once. This could be a pressure device (labeled " 116") or a warning regulator (labeled " 117"). You should ring the wiring from the BC to these sensors in order to detect possible open circuits or short circuits.

0124

This code can indicate both the incorrect operation of the pressure sensor and its incorrect level in the system. The pressure level should be checked , as well as the functionality of the sensor .

0125

The multifunctional switching device is out of order or not functioning correctly. It is marked as " 125". As in previous cases, it will be necessary not only to check the regulator itself, but also to carry out a continuity of the electrical wiring.

0126, 0127

Such combinations indicate the need for additional diagnostics of one of the pressure regulators to determine the status of the gearbox. In the event that you have noticed any malfunctions in the transmission of your car before, then this error should be paid attention to. After all, the gearbox is an important element and its untimely repair will affect the further functioning of the car.

0128

This code indicates a malfunction of the control regulator of the intensive acceleration mode. Check it out in more detail. If this is not done on time, then later this may affect the performance of the engine.

0129

The "brains" of the car recorded damage to the operation of the gearbox pulley speed control device. If the transmission operates in normal mode then rang the wiring .

012A

The device for disengaging the differential lock is out of order or does not function correctly.

012V

Fixed malfunctions in the program switching device.

012C

If such an error appeared during the diagnosis, then this means that something is wrong with the control regulator for controlling the temperature of the transmission fluid in the gearbox. In particular, the sensor may show incorrect data about too low or too high temperature. Check it more thoroughly, and don't forget about the electrical circuit .

0028

The Audi engine control unit reports the failure of the button for locking the doors from inside the passenger compartment.

0029

The Audi on-board computer recorded a failure of the damper mechanism, which is designed to evenly distribute air in the cabin.

002A, 002B

One of these combinations during diagnostics indicates the failure of one of the parking brake lamps. It is necessary to check the performance of these elements and, if they are in order, then check the parking light fuse. If everything is fine with him, then you will need to ring the circuit .

002C, 002D

Thus, the Audi engine control unit recommends the car owner to check the first or second group of actuators.

002E, 002F

A breakdown of the electric mechanism of the retractable jets of the devices designed for washing the headlights is reported .

A breakdown has occurred or the control unit has recorded incorrect operation of the strut flap executive motor, as well as the space on the right side of the legs.

003A

A failure or incorrect operation of the windshield heating relay in the area of the wipers is reported. It is necessary to replace the relay and perform diagnostics again. If the problem persists, check the fuse box.

003B

The ECU signals the driver about the breakage of the terminal responsible for the light in the interior of the Audi car .

003C

This combination indicates the failure of the fog lamp bulbs. First of all, you need to check the condition of the bulbs. If everything is in order, then it is necessary to diagnose the performance of the fuses responsible for the " fog ". If after that the problem remains, then it must be looked for in the wiring or in the fuse box itself.

003D

There is a reported malfunction of the interior lighting bulbs, namely the legroom. As in the previous case, you should diagnose the bulbs themselves, and then check the fuses. In the event that everything works fine, you will have to ring the wiring.

0046

Incorrect voltage level from the starter battery.

0047

The fog lamp key does not function. Perhaps the contact has moved away. You should disassemble the button and check the connection of the contacts directly to the button itself.

0048

The electronic control unit reports a breakdown of the rear fog lamp bulbs (marking "E 314"). As in previous cases, you should check the bulbs, and then check the fuses for performance. In extreme cases, you will have to ring the circuit .

0049

The button responsible for opening the glove compartment does not work. Check it yourself.

004A, 004B, 004C

One of these combinations indicates a failure of one of the three fuses in the outlet. The fuse itself should be replaced and, if the problem persists, then it will need to be looked for in the block.

004D

There was a breakdown of the windshield wiper limit switch.

004E

The electronic control unit detected the failure of the second battery isolation relay. A more thorough diagnosis should be carried out.

004F

There was a breakdown of the interior light switch. Here you will have to disassemble the switch itself and check it in more detail. Perhaps the wire has simply come off the button and will need to be reattached.

0050

The control unit receives an incorrect sunroof option request.

0731, 0732

There was a failure or the potentiometer of the executive motor of the left or right damper, designed to adjust the temperature, is malfunctioning. A more detailed diagnosis of the element should be carried out.

0734

The supply fan control unit is out of order. Check the fuse, then ring the auto circuit .

44ED, 44EE, 44EF, 44Fo, 44F1, 44F2, 44F3, 44F4

The appearance of such combinations of symbols when checking the Audi car indicates an open wiring or short circuit. In particular, we are talking about the injectors of one of the eight cylinders.

4554

This combination indicates incorrect operation of the camshaft position control regulator. In particular, we are talking about a break in the wiring, namely, a short to ground.

4552

In this case, it can also be a regulator for monitoring the position of the camshaft pulley. Only in this case, the electronic control unit reports an open circuit and a short to positive.

45B8

The on-board computer signals a break in the electrical wiring of the recirculation valve. It is necessary to carry out a more detailed check of the connection of the element and, if necessary, eliminate the break.

45B9

In this case, we are also talking about incorrect operation of the recirculation valve. However, with such an error, a short circuit to ground most likely occurred.

45VA, 45VV

Thus, the control unit signals the driver about the incorrect functioning of the recirculation potentiometer The Aydi's ECU receives either a too low or a very high signal. It is necessary to check the operation of the potentiometer in more detail.

45BC

In this case, we are also talking about a potentiometer. Only now he gives an unreliable signal, and the on-board computer is sure of this. Therefore, most likely the essence of the error lies in an inoperative device that should be replaced.

45D1, 45D2

This combination indicates a malfunction of the pump for supplying additional fuel additives for the operation of the particulate filter element. Device marking "V135". By the way, in this case we are talking about a short circuit to plus or an open circuit or a short circuit to ground.

45D3, 45D4

An error has occurred in the operation of the second solenoid valve of the activated charcoal canister. In particular, the control unit signals the car owner about a short circuit to ground or to positive, depending on the error code.

47S6, 47S7, 47S8

This combination indicates a breakdown or incorrect functioning of the secondary processed air pump relay. In particular, we can talk about a short circuit to plus, to ground, or a break in the electrical wiring.

4892-4897

One of these combinations of errors indicates incorrect operation of the first or second injector of the engine cylinders. Such codes indicate a wire break in the circuit or a short circuit to ground or plus. To correct the problem, check the condition of the wiring.

A red symbol signals danger.

When the symbol appears:

  • Stop.
  • Stop the engine.
  • Check the faulty function. Seek qualified assistance if necessary.

Red symbols indicate a malfunction of the first priority (danger).

When the red symbol appears, three consecutive warning beeps sound.

The flashing of the symbol continues until the malfunction is eliminated.

If several violations of the functioning of the first degree of priority occur at once, the symbols appear sequentially, with the duration of the indication of each of them 2 s.

Brake system malfunction

Repair the brake system malfunction as soon as possible.

Flashing on the display symbol 0 means a malfunction of the brake system.

  • Stop.
  • Check the brake fluid level.

If ABS fails, the warning lamp comes on together with the brake malfunction symbol 0.

Attention

If the brake fluid level in the filler tank falls, there is a risk of accidents! Further movement is not permitted. Use qualified help.

The reason for the brake system warning lamp to come on together with the ABS warning lamp may be a failure of the ABS control function. As a consequence, during braking, a relatively quick locking of the rear wheels can take place. Under certain circumstances, this can lead to a skidding of the rear axle of the vehicle - risk of skidding! Drive carefully to the nearest specialist company and rectify the malfunction.

Cooling system malfunction

Repair the malfunction of the cooling system immediately.

The reason for the flashing of the symbol while driving may be overheating or a drop in the coolant level.

  • Stop.
  • Stop the engine.
  • Check the coolant level.
  • Add coolant if necessary.
  • Continue driving only after the symbol goes out.
  • Seek qualified assistance if necessary.
  • If the coolant level is normal, then the cause of overheating may be a failure of the cooling fan.

If the battery discharge warning lamp is additionally lit, the reason may be a break in the poly V-belt.

Attention. Never open the hood if you see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine compartment - risk of burns! Wait until the release of steam or coolant stops.

Caution. Do not continue driving if, the symbol indicates a malfunction of the cooling system - danger of damage to the engine.

Malfunction in the engine oil pressure system

Repair the problem in the engine oil pressure system without delay.

Flashing on the display of the symbol indicates a drop in oil pressure below normal.

  • Stop.
  • Stop the engine.
  • Check the engine oil level.
  • Seek qualified assistance if necessary

Falling engine oil level below normal

Top up engine oil when the level falls below the norm.

Normal engine oil level

Do not continue driving if the symbol flashes at a normal oil level. Also, do not allow the engine to idle - seek qualified assistance.

Note. The oil pressure warning lamp is not an indicator of its level in the lubrication system. Therefore, check the oil level regularly, preferably when refueling.

Drop in tire pressure

Bring underestimated tire pressure to normal as soon as possible.

The appearance of the symbol indicates a drop in air pressure in the tire of at least one wheel.

  • Stop.
  • Check pressure / tires.
  • Replace the wheel if necessary.

The symbol always appears in combination with additional text information, for example REIFENDRUCK HINTEN RECHTS (rear right tire pressure).

When the symbol appears in conjunction with the additional information REIFENDRUCKE PRUFEN (check tire pressure), it can indicate a drop in air pressure in several tires, including the spare wheel.

The display can also show a yellow symbol. This symbol indicates the need to monitor the air pressure.

Yellow symbols (vehicles with FIS, standard)

Yellow symbols indicate a malfunction of the second priority (warning).

When the yellow symbol appears, one warning beep will sound.

Check the corresponding function as soon as possible.

If several warnings are displayed at the same time, the symbols appear sequentially, for about 2 seconds each.

Defective brake signal

Cars with FIS and on-board computer

When the BREMSLICHT symbol or display comes on, the following items must be checked and, if necessary, replaced or repaired by Audi:

incandescent brake lights,

connections in the wiring,

brake signal switch.

Replace / repair at Audi.

Malfunction of low beam, reversing headlights

If the symbol lights up, check the following components:

incandescent low beam

reversing light bulbs

connections in the wiring.

Replace / repair at Audi.

Note. This function is monitored by the fault monitoring system only when the light is on.

Front brake pad wear

When the symbol appears, contact Audi to have the front (and rear) wheel brake linings checked.

Battery voltage deviation from the norm

Car with FIS and on-board computer

When the symbol appears, contact Audi and check the following components:

V-belt

voltage regulator

battery condition

Remember also about the battery discharge warning lamp.

The voltage of the on-board network can also be monitored using a voltmeter.

Flywheel (Dual Mass). On diesel engines. Consumable, requires replacement every 100-150,000 km. Breaks down due to frequent driving at low speeds with improper use of gears.

Timing (Chain). There are 4 of them, the photo shows how they are located. More often, no one does the replacement of mileage and prevention of tensioners. Both the chains themselves (stretch) and the chain tensioners fail. The problem is serious and costly. The main symptoms of the onset of problems are wedging at the start.

Filter (Particulate). With a mileage of about 200,000 km, it gets clogged with soot. As a result, the machine goes into emergency mode with an error. The main symptoms are excessive fuel consumption and a gradual decrease in engine power.

Injectors (Piezo). The problem is on diesels. Requires replacement after 150-180,000 km. A breakdown occurs in the electrical circuit of the piezo package. Car enthusiasts call it an Audi marriage. Symptoms include vibrations at work and floating speed.

Intake manifold (Flaps).

The range for a breakdown is within 100-250,000 km, depending on what quality oil and diesel fuel were used. The sore starts from a large amount of soot sticking to it.

Turbine. (Compressor). Requires replacement after 300,000 km. It may fail earlier, mainly due to a rare oil change.

Valve (EGR). Requires replacement after after 250,000 km. Contaminated with soot along with the recirculation cooler. The replacement takes place together with the radiator. Car enthusiasts recommend turning it off and not using it at all.

Rear calipers. The rear caliper guides are designed in such a way that they begin to wear out a lot. Symptoms are a knock coming from the suspension, but actually from the wheels. It is necessary to replace the entire caliper bracket, or grind new guides, not sold separately.

Handbrake (Electric). Requires replacement or repair, usually occurs at a mileage of 150-200,000 km. There is a closure of the electric elements of the parking brake due to old age and moisture ingress. Symptoms in the form of glitches of the parking brake button, the rear wheels jam, an error appears.

Climate control. Requires repair or simple cleaning. The first glitches will appear on a mileage of 100,000 km. The pistons of the hydraulic valve block, over time, become covered with plaque and begin to get stuck in different positions.

Deleting codes from memory without using a reader

Bosch Mono-Jetronic, Mono-Motronic, KE-Jetronic and KE-Motronic

Use the above procedure to retrieve the codes.

Switch off the ignition.

Fuse the test contacts above the fuel pump relay (Mono-Jetronic only up to July 1988) or close the auxiliary switch (other systems).

Switch on the ignition.

After 5 seconds, open the breaker or remove the fuse. All codes in memory will be erased.

Switch off the ignition.

Switch off the ignition and remove the key. Disconnect the ECU connector for at least 30 seconds.

All systems (alternative method)

Switch off the ignition and disconnect the negative cable from the battery for about 5 minutes.

Reconnect the wire to the battery. The first disadvantage of this method is that the ECU will reset all adapted parameter values to their original state. In order to adapt the system to your engine again, you will need to start the engine from a running state, and then drive the car at different engine speeds for 20 ... 30 minutes. In addition, let the engine idle for about 10 minutes. The second drawback is that you will have to re-set the security code of the radio, the current time value and other stored values, which will also be reset when the battery is disconnected. It is best to use a reader to remove codes.
