How to diagnose an error?

BMW error diagnosis technology with OBD1 systems:

  • On a car with the ignition on, the gas pedal is squeezed out five times for five seconds.
  • The “Check Engine” indicator will light up on the instrument panel when the test begins. The light will turn on for five seconds and then turn off for half a second.
  • Then the indicator will turn on again for 2.5 seconds, and after a pause of 2.5 seconds, it will start displaying fault codes.

The most accurate options for checking a BMW car are using a computer or a diagnostic scanner. But to implement this method, the user needs to prepare in advance special equipment for testing or a laptop with software installed on it.

 

The algorithm of actions when conducting a check using a tester or a computer:

  • The user connects the computer to the diagnostic output in the vehicle.
  • The ignition is activated and the engine is started.
  • The software starts up on the laptop. If a scanner is used for verification, then it must be turned on.
  • The testing process begins. Depending on the vehicle model, the firmware version of the control unit and the laptop software or the scanner version, the procedure can take from several minutes to an hour.
  • Upon completion of the verification process, a list of errors found in the operation of the BMW car will appear on the laptop or tester screen. The user needs to decipher these codes and, in accordance with the information received, repair the units and assemblies. After the vehicle is restored to working order, combinations of problems are deleted from the memory of the control unit.

Dashboard test for E36 cars 1992-1999:

  • On the control panel, the daily mileage reset button, located on the odometer, is pressed and held.
  • The key is turned to position I in the ignition lock. An inscription will light up on the dashboard screen indicating the beginning of the test – Test 01.
  • The trip mileage reset button on the vehicle is released. The control combination will start issuing diagnostic cycles, alternately indicating the internal code of the car, VIN code, software version, dashboard number, etc.

Dashboard test for Z3 vehicles is performed as follows:

  • On the control panel, press and hold the reset button for the daily mileage.
  • In the ignition switch, the key is turned to position I. An inscription should appear on the instrument panel screen indicating the start of the diagnosis.
  • Then comes the moment of unlocking. The button for resetting the daily mileage in the car is held until the message “Test 15” appears on the display.
  • The odoment key is pressed for a few seconds. This control element should be held until the word “Off” appears on the shield.
  • After that, inscriptions and numbers will begin to appear on the dashboard, indicating the technical parameters of the power unit, including the amount of oil in the engine and the temperature of the coolant.
